Lighting is an important feature in all homes. Not only is it an everyday essential, it can have a dramatic impact on a home’s look and feel. And, compared with many makeover must-haves, it doesn’t have to break the bank. Lighting fixtures and fittings come at price points to suit all budgets.
If you’re updating your electrical fixtures, there are two very smart aspects worth considering - is it a good time to think about whether your lighting is energy efficient and whether are you getting the best value electricity.
Energy efficient lighting
Old incandescent bulbs and, even worse, halogen bulbs are terribly inefficient sources of light. Halogen bulbs are red-hot wasters of electricity, literally. Have you felt the heat they radiate? Interestingly, New Zealand is one of the few countries that has yet to ban incandescent bulbs, but that doesn’t mean you need to continue to use them!
Modern LED bulbs are remarkably cheap, are compatible with all conventional fittings, last a long long time and burn up to 80% less power than incandescent bulbs. Be sure to use reputable brand though as there are many cheap imported options that really just don't cut it.
Why LED bulbs?
The main advantage of LED is the power-saving properties and the lifespan - and this is a well known fact. Not so commonly discussed is that LED lighting produces less waste light and more useful lumens than other lighting technologies; they also offer a wider colour temperature range so their versatility is undoubtedly superior.
Additionally, they are more durable and reliable. Being able to withstand more impact and vibrations than other bulbs, they are ideal for outdoor use.
Can halogen bulbs be replaced with LEDs?
Yes, they can. In some circumstances, you can simply change the bulb, however other circumstances may require you to change the fitting. As long as the mounting base (socket) is the same size and type, you can use an LED bulb in an existing fixture. If the mounting base isn't the same size and type, the LED bulb will not fit the socket. You should never use a bulb with a higher wattage than what is recommended for the fixture.
If in doubt, don't do it! Talk to your local lighting store, or call a sparky.
What do I do if I can't replace my existing bulbs?
It's recommended to change out your fittings by using a certified electrician. This expenses is often the biggest budget concern but actually, it's generally not as bad as you think!
